The Mike Austin Swing with Jaacob Bowden

Today I felt an intuitive impulse to post a video to YouTube that was previously a paid product…my "The Mike Austin Swing with Jaacob Bowden" that was created in 2012.

For those that don't know, I began my golf career at age 27 as a 14-handicapper. I quit my computer engineering job in Kansas and moved out to California on December 20th, 2002 to go for a career in golf. A month after I arrived, I met Dan Shauger, who gave me free coaching nearly every day for a month and then gradually less afterwards. Dan also introduced me to his friend Mike Austin, the man who at age 64 hit a 515-yard Guinness World Record drive of 515-yards in the 1974 US National Senior Open.

With Dan and Mike's help, I quickly lowered my handicap. First, I beat my best of 78 with a 74, then a 73, then my first time under par with a 69 on March 26th, 2003.

Also before the end of March (less than 3 months!) I added tons of distance (increasing my longest drive from 330 yards to 358 yards to 377 yards to 393 yards).

Granted I'm am a natural athlete, but some of this improvement came from additional practice. After all, I had just quit my engineering job and my new "job" was working on my game all day. Anyone is bound to improve when they add that much practice time to their schedule.

I'm also naturally strong, but still some came from golf fitness and working out in the gym. This later became the basis for my swing speed training programs at Swing Man Golf.

Some came from my almost daily technique work through Dan and our occasional visits to Mike Austin's house, which was nearby.

  • I learned how to leverage power from my legs out to the golf club, relying less on rotational power and more on lateral and vertical power. This also had the side benefit of relieving a lot of stress off my knees, hips, and spine.
  • I learned how to strike the ball more consistently in the "sweet spot" (better contact means more distance and also more accuracy/precision) through the concept of the swing circle center using the C7 vertebrae.
  • I got permission to trust my instinct to minimize face rotation through the hitting area and consequently started hitting much more powerfully and accurately/precisely due to better ball striking. Basically, my shot dispersion window got much smaller.

Obviously a lot of people wondered how I improved so quickly.

On October 15th, 2007, I launched Swing Man Golf as a way of answering that question for people, while creating a new source of income for myself.

On April 21, 2012, I finished creating my Mike Austin video that shared what I learned from Mike and Dan…integrated with other videos from Mike Austin and spiced up with my own interpretations.

At the time, I was still struggling to get myself out of the debt I took on from switching over to a career in golf. So, I wrote, filmed, and edited everything myself with some very basic filming equipment that I had (wireless microphone, tripod, iPad as a teleprompter (hanging on the tripod using a coat hanger - haha), and iMovie on my MacBook Pro laptop.

I'm not a professional film maker, but I think it turned out okay…all things considered.

I should add that I no longer purely use the Mike Austin swing. Rather, I've refined what I do to make things work better for me personally. However, I do honor that this was a valuable part of my learning and growth as a golfer, and that others are interested in learning what I learned. That's why I keep the video out in the public realm.

Anyway, give it a watch below:

On a side note, the shirt I was wearing in the above cover photo with Mike was the very first logo for Swing Man Golf, which was drawn by my friend/roommate in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California in 2004. We lived on Carpenter in the 2nd house up from 1st.

Industry Integrity and Getting Custom Fit

These days I have a difficult time reading the golf industry magazines and checking out other various forms of golf media. For a game that is supposed to be about integrity, the actual business of golf does not always have it.

For example, there is pay to play involved. I've been asked to write for big publications. One time my draft for a certain magazine received high praise by the assistant editor only to have it be rejected in the end. I asked why because he thought it was fantastic and it also perfectly mirrored the sample article in the magazine that I was asked to use as a guide. I was told that the author of the other article buys advertising and my company hadn't, so his boss said my article had to be pulled.

Many online review are also paid reviews…and articles that look like articles are actually paid advertisements. You really have to read between the lines on those things.

Publicly traded golf companies often act for share holders and not the customers. It's in part why you see accelerated product life cycles in golf (and other industries) even when there is no performance improvement by the newly released product.

There's also a ridiculous amount of well-meaning but, quite frankly, bad golf instruction, coaching, and golf fitness training advice out there.

That being said, I still feel like I need to at least keep a finger on the pulse of the industry. So, yesterday I was thumbing through the latest issue of Golfweek, and I actually came across a nice graphic.

Custom-Club-Fitting

It reminded me of when I was just on my golf trip to Alabama and one of the conversations I was having with a couple of the guys revolved around custom club fitting and how beneficial it can be to golfer performance of any skill level.

In the above graphic, this guy not only got longer but ended up with a tighter shot dispersion too!

Awesome!

Anyway, one of the points we were talking about was that I think you should be careful about is that the term "custom fit" gets thrown around a bit carelessly and perhaps in a way that lacks integrity. Someone or a company might tell you that you are being custom fit, but really it's not…or not to a level that makes as big of a difference as it truly can.

It's kind of like buying a suit or custom clothing. For example, while it's true that buying something in a small, medium, large, or x-large is on some level custom fitting, it's not quite the same as if various other measurements are taken for your chest, neck, waist, inseam, etc…and the clothing is then made for you and you alone.

The same goes for custom golf club fitting.

There are also a couple other potential issues.

Sometimes the custom club fitter is testing from limited options. Getting fit from 1 brand won't have the same affect as having the option of testing from 10 brands. I remember going to a Top 100 club fitter who was very knowledgable and we went through a great fitting process. But his inventory was limited. In the end, although I got fitted for a nice driver that was a much better option than buying off the rack at a big box store, once I was able to later visit another fitting company who had a much deeper inventory to pull from, I was able to pick up another 8 yards on my drives while maintaining the same dispersion.

The fitter also may not be completely transparent about the incentives they receive for selling certain brands, or worse yet are on staff with one brand only. It's understandable and it doesn't mean those people are bad people, it's just one of the flaws of the business model that you have to watch out for.

So…ideally, you want a knowledgeable fitter who has a lot of options to test, has no conflicting allegiance to a particular brand, and who makes decisions solely based on your personal performance.

It is for this reason that I'm a fan of fitting companies like Cool Clubs (7 locations), True Spec Golf (21 locations), and Club Champion (74 locations).

I don't have a personal experience with Cool Clubs, but it seems like they might satisfy the above criteria.

I went to a True Spec in New York a few times and had a fine experience. They are in the dog house with me right now though because Golf Magazine just named True Spec the #1 Clubfitter. Yes, True Spec is good. However, one problem with this award is that True Spec and Golf Magazine are owned by the same company. Yikes! No bias there at all!

Thus my current favorite of the companies/fitters I am aware of is actually Club Champion, also in particular because they have 74 locations in the United States. With that size of a company, they don't have as much of a problem stocking lots of testing options. Their fitters also go through a month long education process and they are paid on salary with no knowledge of the head and shaft margins. It's truly about your personal performance.

One drawback for some will be the cost, though. Their fitting prices are relatively high. However, that may end up being cheaper in the long run than, for example, buying one or two drivers each season in hopes that it will finally be "the one". You'll also be able to rule out a variable when making further improvements to your game as the culprit to a bad shot(s) wouldn't likely be the equipment.

To help those that need it with the cost, I set up a deal with them in which if you mention you were referred by Jaacob Bowden, PGA, you'll get a discount on any service or equipment you purchase through them. To be transparent, I could've taken an option in which I also receive a financial kickback for the referral, but I wanted to refrain from the conflict of interest and recommend you to them simply because they do a good job and not because I'm getting paid.

Enjoy the discount as well as the longer, more accurate, and more consistent shots!

4:26 – “I think that flew the exact same yardage. No, we did not press replay!”

7:24 - “Feeling good so far. Sound good. They really sound nice. Yeah, it’s not like you’re going to pick these up and they feel different than what you’d be expecting from a Titleist or something like that. They feel quite nice.”

8:14 – “It’s gotta be a massive value to literally anyone.”

12:35 – “You know one thing I’m definitely aware of here is these irons are not short. In terms of how far they go, they are quick.”

18:39 – “I really hate to admit it, I’m hitting these 1000 times better than my own irons.”

18:48 – “That’s flowing right on the number, 198 on the fly.”

18:58 –

“I wasn’t really expecting to hit really good shots, if I’m honest. I was a little worried about this test.”

“Is that right?”

“I kinda thought I would get to 7 and 6-iron and just be hitting like crap.”

“Well, the opposite has happened. You’re flushing these. You’re hitting them really really nice.”

19:46 – “I don’t see anyone that shouldn’t try them.”

20:29 – “Performance speaks for itself. If it works, then it’s worth a shot.”

20:40 – “If your ball striking is a weakness and striking and being inconsistent is the reason for that, this really is one solution you could look at.”

20:51 – “I think I’m making better contact for sure.”

20:52 – “I would 100% say that this is the cleanest full set test we’ve done.”

20:41 – “That’s as good as I can hit it.”

23:00 – “I think mission accomplished.”

23:11 – “Really good yardage gaps.”

23:44 – “I think it helped me be more consistent.”

23:50 - “That is about as consistent as I’ve gone through in a set of irons.”

24:04 – “I think there’s so much good engineering that went in to the head with what each club is engineered to do .”

25:28 – “I’m pleasantly surprised.”

25:46 - “It’s a true validation for the technology.”

26:24 - “I could tell you my own irons aren’t gapped that well.”

26:39 – “I think this was done properly.”

26:59 - “They are very competitive on price, obviously made of good materials, and clearly can be fit properly.”

Get Your Benefits at Club Champion Golf

Club-Champion-Golf-Logo

Playing golf clubs that are custom fit to you are an extremely important component to playing your best golf. Don't continue wasting your money by buying off the rack.

For irons, I recommend Sterling Irons single length irons.

For the rest of your bag, head over to your nearest Club Champion Golf, a brand agnostic premium custom club fitter with locations in almost every major city in the US.

Having a wide selection of components is important to make sure you are getting the best possible setup. Being brand agnostic is important because their fitters don't have any incentive to push a certain brand on you. The fittings are truly based on performance alone.

Even if you've been through a fitting before, I'd still recommend going. About a year ago, I had gone through a brand agnostic fitting with another fitter. He did a great job isolating a setup that worked well for me. However, his inventory was limited…and there is also new equipment that is out this year.

I decided to go over to my local Club Champion to re-check to see if we could beat the performance of my existing driver.

Sure enough, we did!

Take a look at this:

Driver-Fitting

The shots in yellow were my existing gamer. With the exception of the one that I yanked left, the dispersion and consistency was pretty good and given my current level of fitness and training I was averaging 290.5 yards/drive.

We tried about 8 other different setups that we felt might have a chance to improve on my performance. 6 of them were worse but then we found a setup that got me a little bit farther and with a little tighter dispersion. We played around with that and arrived at the setup that lead to the shots in brown.

So with no changes to my swing, I was not only able to hit with a tighter dispersion that will give me more confidence off the tee and allow me to pick the side of the fairway I want to hit on, but I also added distance getting up to 299.3 yards/drive.

That means that even though I was already playing a good driver, but testing from Club Champion's extensive level of available inventory, we found a combo that gave me more accuracy and 8.8 yards more off the tee.

Pretty awesome!

We also took a look at my putter that I had custom fit in a tour department in 2011. Interestingly, for my stroke there was nothing that we found that could beat it. So, no changes required, but this gave me the confidence that what I was putting with was the best possible putter for me.

I was excited enough that I wanted to share my experience…and I also decided to set up some benefits just for you.

So if you think this is for you, make sure to mention that you were referred by Jaacob for any of your appointments or purchases…and you'll come away with better performing clubs as well as qualify for a referral benefit from me!!!

More Distance for Golf - Part 2 - Long Drive Equipment

Flightscope Optimzer can help you dial in your driver launch conditions to maximize distance
In Part 1, I wrote about some of the technical aspects of the swing you can employ for more distance in your golf game from a professional long driver point of view. In Part 2, I get in to the equipment aspect.

As a visitor of GolfWRX, you probably have an interest in golf equipment… and I assume you are also likely aware of the importance of club fitting. To hit the longest drives possible, club fitting is an absolute must. No top long driver skips this component of distance, because advancing or not advancing can come down to only a yard or two.

Equipment optimization can be the thing that makes the difference.

Taking Sterling Irons® From An Idea To A Product

Tom Wishon and Jaacob Bowden draw up their initial ideas for Sterling Irons® on a whiteboard in Durango, CO in October 2013
As fellow equipment junkies, I’m sure many of you have already heard about Sterling Irons® single length irons.

Usually, with golf clubs, you only get to see the end-product that comes with all the marketing hype and fancy words meant to get you to buy the product. But it’s not too often that you get to hear an in-depth firsthand experience from one of the co-creators of a club design about what went into making the clubs you see on the shelves.

I am hoping to do that for you today.

Episode 8 - Pace of Change Podcast

Many thanks to Dude Spellings and Scott Dawley for having me on Episode 8 of the Pace of Change golf podcast.

Show Notes:

Welcome to Episode 8. Today we’re talking with Jaacob Bowden. It was actually hard to nail down an appropriate title for exactly what it is he does. Let’s just say, in the world of golf, he’s pretty much done it all. Jaacob is someone who understands the value of writing down his goals and plans, and then pursuing them step by step until achieved.

Take for example, his goal of becoming a professional golfer. You’d probably guess this was his childhood dream, something he fantasized about since he was a kid. Not exactly. Jaacob was 27 when he got started on this dream. And he was by no means a scratch golfer either. A 14 handicap, someone who admired the single digit player in his foursome. He was quite literally the average golfer. An average golfer with a superhuman belief system and a powerhouse work ethic.

His story blossoms from there into a beautiful picture of a late bloomer who falls in love with golf, and turns his love of the game into a budding entrepreneurial career. He’s an out of the box thinker, a swing speed teacher, an accomplished Speedgolfer, a
senior writer for GolfWRX.com, and finally, with the recent release of Sterling Irons®, a golf club innovator. Alright, I’ve said enough. Let’s catch up with Professional Golf Entrepreneur, (hopefully that sums it up), Jaacob Bowden.

I hope you enjoy our conversation with Jaacob Bowden. Definitely want to encourage you to check out his swing speed training program. Like he mentioned, most golfers have never done any
swing speed training, and therefore can see massive gains in just a few weeks time. For his unique view on current topics and events in the world of golf, follow him on your social media platforms of choice: he’s on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.

You can listen to the episode below.

Three Ways To Hit Longer Drives

Jaacob Bowden discusses 3 ways to hit longer drives

Those of you who have read my article “How Far Should You Hit Your Golf Clubs” may remember this success story:

“With a 2-degree change in driver loft and some minor adjustments made to his swing path, angle of attack, etc., one of my amateur students went from being an already above-average efficient driver at 2.61 yards/mph to an extremely efficient one at 2.75 yards/mph. So with no change to his 102 mph swing speed, he increased his driving distance average from 266 to 280. Then after some swing speed training, he got up to 112 mph and can now hit drives around 307 yards with that same efficiency of 2.75 yards/mph. That’s 41 more yards!”

Let’s talk about the three reasons this student was able to achieve the extra 41 yards, because they can help every golfer add distance to their drives.

How Far Should You HIt Your Golf Clubs?

One of the nice things about having all this new fancy technological equipment like Trackman, Flightscope, ShotLink, etc., at various PGA TOUR events is that distance data can be gathered for each of the players.

In case you haven’t come across it already, here are the approximate Trackman carry distance averages for men at the professional level.
