2025 as a Pro Golfer & Explorer | A Year in Motion

2025 was a year of motion…on the course, at the range, on-camera, and in deeper layers of life.

From winter swings at Five Iron Golf to national award recognition with the Golf Fitness Association of America...

From Detroit Golf Club ahead of the PGA TOUR’s Rocket Mortgage Classic to Yellow Stone Club on Trackman Golf...

From writing for GolfWRX and GFAA to building “Professional Golfer & Explorer” into a real identity...from meditation at Belle Isle Golf Detroit to quantum golf experiments...

From bunker work and mechanics to deeper conversations about life with my wife Jen through our new podcast...

This is a look back at some of the moments.

Thanks for being here.

Watching Someone in Their Passion Space

There’s nothing like seeing someone do what they love in their true “passion space.”

In this clip, I was sharing why that can be even more compelling than a competitive “gladiator arena,” and I reflected on the real pressure that shows up when your bills depend on how you perform.

It’s a reminder that you can grow through it, but the system doesn’t have to be built that way.

The full episode is on my YouTube Channel.

Learning From a Monkey in Captivity

When I was in Morocco to play a tour event, I had a moment in the medina involving a captive monkey used for tourist photos that stuck with me.

Later, recalling that moment led to a deeper discussion about “performing for survival” versus playing for passion and love of the game.

The full episode is on my YouTube Channel.

Survival Through Performance | Competing vs Playing For Joy

In this episode of The Long and Short of It, Jennifer and Jaacob unpack the idea of “performing for survival,” when your identity and your income are tied to how you play.

Starting with a memory from one of Jaacob's tour events in Morocco and a striking moment of seeing a monkey forced to perform, they trace the parallel to life as a working pro: loving the game, yet feeling the pressure of “if I don’t play well this week, I don’t know how I’m paying my bills.”

From there, they explore the difference between competing like gladiators and playing in a true “passion space,” and why watching someone do what they love can be even more powerful than watching them win or lose.

They end with a grounded reminder: yes, you can grow through the pressure, but the system doesn’t have to be built this way, and we can treat people a little bit better.

Pro Golf’s Harsh Math: Most Players Lose Money

Even on the PGA TOUR, there were players losing money once you factored in expenses like travel, caddies, coaches, and entry fees. When I played the NGA Hooters Tour, you needed about a top 20 just to break even. That meant roughly 136 guys in the field lost money every single week. I was so frustrated knowing the PGA TOUR had money to spare that I wrote a letter to Jay Monahan, and not long after the Tour introduced the Earnings Assurance Program.

But the deeper problem remains. We celebrate purses of tens of millions of dollars going to players who don’t need it while thousands of other talented players grind at a loss. A portion of that money could help fund those players with $120,000 a year to develop their games instead of getting weeded out purely because of funding.

Ben Hogan, Tinnitus & Tuning Into Hidden Frequencies

As a kid sitting on my parents’ 33 acres, I suddenly heard a piercing tone that has never gone away. I gather it’s tinnitus, but the best alternative explanation I’ve gotten so far is that I’m picking up the hum of the electromagnetic field we all live in.

Tuning into these frequencies feels connected to the telepathic abilities that have shown up for me in recent years, including having Ben Hogan “caddie” for me in this video series.

The full video is on my YouTube Channel.

I'm About To Have Ben Hogan Caddie For Me…Telepathically

I know how this might sound: I’m about to have Ben Hogan caddie for me…using telepathy. As a professional golfer who grew up on science and numbers in the “Show Me” state of Missouri, this may be just as weird for me as it is for you.

In this video (Part 1), I talk through how I experience telepathy, how I tell it’s not just my own inner voice, and why I’m willing to explore something this far outside the usual golf playbook. I share some personal back stories, from hearing a message for my mom that cracked something open for both of us to dealing with tinnitus now and as a kid.

This is all part of my “professional golfer & explorer” rebrand: turning on the camera, letting you into my process, and sharing with you what’s happening out on the frontier of golf.

In Part 2, I’ll take this onto the course at Detroit Golf Club to show you what it’s like to have Ben Hogan caddie for me.

GOAT Roger Federer Won Barely More Than Half His Points

Roger Federer, considered by some as the greatest tennis player of all time, only won about 54% of the points he ever played.

This clip was park of a larger conversation Jennifer and I were having about failure, resilience, and success.

When Charles Howell III Topped It | Even PGA TOUR Pros Mess Up

PGA TOUR pro Charles Howell III once topped a fairway shot on a par 5 right in front of me, after driving it perfect all day at Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey, California.

In this clip, I talk about how that moment reminded me that even the best players in the world are still human, despite the perception you might have of them from TV highlights.

The full episode is on my YouTube Channel.

Hit Ball, Go Forward: Roger Federer, Charles Howell III, and Resilience

In this episode of The Long and Short of It, Jennifer and Jaacob pull a card labeled “Charles Howell III” and trace a story from Jaacob’s early years as a new pro at Pebble Beach into a wider conversation about resilience when things go sideways.

Watching a world-class player top a fairway shot or hearing Roger Federer’s reminder that even he as a GOAT barely won more than half his points, they unpack what it can take to recover after a stumble.

Along the way, Jen brings in her doctoral journey, perfectionism, and performance anxiety, and together they land on a simple mantra, “hit ball, go forward,” as one way to meet mistakes, creative blocks, and everyday stumbles with more neutrality, self-kindness, and courage to keep moving.

Effortless Power Golf Swing (Hand Action Like Fred Couples)

Golfers like Fred Couples, Luke Donald, Aldrich Potgieter, and Cameron Champ hit it long without looking like they’re swinging hard. In this short, I break down the “7:30 to 1:30” hand action and how an active hit at the ball helps create that effortless power look in a swing.

The full episode is on my YouTube Channel.

The 6 Wrist & Forearm Actions In The Golf Swing

There are six basic wrist and forearm actions in the golf swing: palmar flexion, dorsiflexion, supination, pronation, ulnar deviation, and radial deviation.

In this short I break down what each one looks like so you can start understanding how your hand action really works in the swing.

The clip is from a full test video on my YouTube channel where I compare these motions to see which produces the most power and accuracy.

The full episode is on my YouTube Channel.

Best Way To Use Your Hands In The Golf Swing (Power & Accuracy Test)

Golf swing hand action can be really confusing for players looking for more power and accuracy. In this video I break down and isolate the six basic wrist and forearm motions in the golf swing.

  • Flipping (palmar/dorsiflexion)
  • Cocking up and down (radial/ulnar deviation)
  • Forearm rotation (supination/pronation)

I then test them head-to-head to see which actually produces the most powerful and straightest shots. I also explore how neutral, weak, and strong grips change what happens throughout the swing, and why some common, well-meaning “cocking, uncocking, and rolling of the wrists and forearms” golf instruction can actually hurt both distance and dispersion.

Is there a clear winner? Let's explore!

They Thought She Moved For His Career

Everyone assumed we were moving for his golf career. In reality, every move—Monterey to LA, Zurich, New York, DC, Detroit—was for her work, and we had to figure out how to keep two careers and one relationship thriving while constantly starting over in new places.

Relocating for Love: Partnership, Sacrifice, and Starting Over

In Episode 011 of The Long and Short of It, Jaacob and Jennifer pull an “invisible card” that reads: “Moving around for Jen’s career,” and, while recording from the Eaton DC during a work trip in Washington, DC, trace how more than two decades of relocations for her work have shaped both of their lives. Jen realizes she hadn’t fully seen how each move forced Jaacob to rebuild his local golf community from scratch, which opens a deeper conversation about the dynamics of successful and supportive relationships and co-creating a shared path while surrendering to the flow of life.

How I Entered Mike Austin’s 515-Yard Circle

The Downriver Effects of a Torn ACL | The Long and Short of It | 010

In Episode 010 of The Long and Short of It, Jaacob and Jennifer pull a card that reads: “Tearing my ACL after senior year + NBA dreams,” and trace how a knee injury at 17 shifted Jaacob’s trajectory—and his mindset. He describes making a college basketball team while braced and tentative, the long tail of that fear in later competition (from long drive to Speedgolf), and even recurring dreams about performance at moments of truth. Together they examine how early trauma can create protective patterns that mute our power, how to spot those “blind spots,” and how the point of some setbacks may be to redirect us toward a new path.

Unseen Golf Talents | Why the System Misses Them

Would you believe there are golfers far more talented than Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods? In this clip from The Long and Short of It podcast (Episode 009), Jaacob reflects on how the system weeds out potential greats, while Jennifer shares the story of a village kid with a beautiful swing.

Love Was Already The Win

When I turned pro in golf at 27—after starting as an average golfer only six months earlier—I wasn’t sure where the journey would lead. By the time I neared 30, I didn’t know how I was going to keep going. But even if my golf career didn’t work out, I already felt like I’d won—because it brought me to Jen.

It's Only Too Late If You Don't Start Now

In Episode 009 of The Long and Short of It, Jaacob and Jennifer open with the “rainbows” in the room (spoiler: window crystals) before diving into what they’d tell their 20-something selves—now that Jennifer is 46 and Jaacob is 49 (50 soon). Starting, as usual, from a moment in Jaacob’s golf career, they revisit his mid-20s leap from a stable corporate job to professional golf—despite being an average golfer at the time.

Golf With 1D | Playing Beyond the 3D Game

Golf is played in three-dimensional space—swing technique, shot dispersions, equipment, strategy. But what if we can access other dimensions to play differently—and better?

In this Short, I'm talking about shifting awareness into one-dimensional space: no hole, no wind, no separation—just oneness and flow.

Pulled from a longer experimental round blending golf with quantum physics,
spirituality, and philosophy.

It's Not So Easy To Make a Hole-In-One

It’s not so easy to make a hole-in-one, even on a short little 35-yard hole on a par 3 course. In fact, from just 25 yards in the fairway, pros will only make the shot about 1 in 105 times.

The full episode is on my YouTube Channel.

Can I Make A Hole-In-One In 100 Tries?

Can I make a hole-in-one on the 4th hole at Belle Isle Golf Detroit?

It’s a short par-3 course, and this hole is only 35 yards. I’m playing off a mat to protect the tee box, and it’s not a traditional round.

Still, the shot isn’t simple. I’ve got to go under a tree and over a bunker. The wind varies. I can’t see the cup. The slope near the hole is an illegally steep 7.51%—for context, the PGA TOUR typically limits pin placements to slopes between 0–4%.

A statistician told me that the odds of a pro like me holing out from just 25 yards in the fairway are about 1 in 105. From 35 yards, with these conditions? The odds are definitely worse.

Mathematically, I shouldn’t make it.

But can clear intention help beat the odds?

Let's explore it!

RIP Mr Moses

RIP Mr. Moses
Born June 2007 – Passed August 2, 2025

Many of you came to know our two Bombay cats, Moses and Simone, who we picked up while living in Switzerland and who’ve journeyed with us ever since—from New York to D.C. to Detroit.

Early Saturday morning, we woke to find Moses had peacefully passed in bed with us during the night. He’d been doing great, so it was a completely unexpected way to start the weekend.

This video was made by our kind neighbor who cat-sat for us over the past couple of years, always sending the most amazing photos and videos—the collection of which Jen and I have called “While You Were Away.”

With Simone having passed a couple of years ago, it really feels like the end of an era.

We’ll miss them both deeply.

What is My Swing Vision? Breaking it Down - Part 2 of 3

In this second of three videos, I continue to elaborate on one of the things I’ve been working on in 2025 — something I call my “Swing Vision.”

Together, these three videos lay the groundwork and provide context for many things to come.

We pulled our first conversation starter card — and it took us back to 2003.

That was shortly after I took a leap of faith and left the stability of a corporate job to see if I could make it on the PGA TOUR… starting as an average golfer.

Episode 2 of The Long and Short of It is now live on YouTube.

Ahead of the PGA TOUR Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club, I got in a calm round on the North Course — the same course my fellow pros are playing this week.

New Podcast + Something for Golf Pros

Who would start a golf podcast that’s not really a golf podcast...with their spouse?

Apparently, we would.

Episode 1 of "The Long and Short of It" is now live on my YouTube channel.

We use stories and prompts from a 20+ year career as a professional golfer as jumping-off points to have deeper conversations — about ourselves, society, the world, and life itself.

Rebranding as a Pro Golfer and Explorer

After 20+ years on tour and in the golf industry, I’ve decided to go through a rebrand.

This raw video is the first of a new chapter—one that’s more aligned with who I truly am, what I stand for, and what I want to share with the world.

In this video, I talk about:

• Why I’m rebranding
• What changes are coming
• How you can be part of the journey

What Affordable Housing Really Means in Detroit

It's normal for me to be interviewed and quoted in golf media but being interviewed by The Detroit News about affordable housing in Detroit is a new one!

Broke 400 Yards on Trackman at 49

414 Yards.

A couple weeks ago, I was playing in a pilot league at 5Iron Golf Detroit Downtown when I hit a 414-yard drive on the TrackMan simulator.

As best I can remember, this might’ve been my first drive over 400 yards on a simulator, and I definitely wasn’t expecting it. One of my playing partners even said it was the best drive he’d ever seen.

I’ve had a few 400+ yard drives before, but it’s been a long time. My longest officially measured drive ever was 421 yards back in 2007 when I set a grid record to win a World Long Drive Championship qualifier in Warner Springs, CA. That one was with firm ground, some elevation, and a left-to-right cross wind. I played a low-running fade with low spin, and it ran through the grid into the weeds, still bouncing hard.

This new one? Simulated course in Montana. Downhill. High elevation. Definitely helped. But still, 49 years old, with no recent swing speed training. I tried to snap a photo with my phone, but the projector screen changed too quickly. Fortunately, I had 5 witnesses.

Golf Longevity: 3 Proven Fitness Strategies to Maintain Swing Speed & Distance (PGA Magazine Feature)

ICYMI, I’m honored to be featured in the January 2025 issue of PGA Magazine (Vol. 106, No. 1). My contribution to the Golf Fitness Association of America (GFAA) best practice highlights a key topic: helping golfers maintain their distance as they age.

In the article, I share three simple but effective strategies that everyday golfers can use to stay in shape, keep their speed up, and continue hitting the ball far well into their later years.

Big thanks to PGA Magazine for the feature! If you’re interested, you can read my section on page 82. Check out a snippet of the article in the attached screenshot.
